Overview

Belize packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes and cultures into one small, English-speaking country — and this 6-day self-drive is designed to show you the very best of it at your own pace. You'll collect your SUV at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport and strike west along the George Price Highway into the Cayo District, where ancient Maya cities rise out of the jungle and underground rivers carve through limestone mountains. Two nights in San Ignacio put you within easy reach of Xunantunich and Caracol, the ATM Cave, cave tubing on Barton Creek, and the wildlife-rich grounds of the Chiquibul Reserve.

On day three you swing south on the Hummingbird Highway — consistently rated one of Central America's most scenic drives — past jade-green hills, citrus groves and Blue Hole National Park, arriving at Hopkins on the Dangriga coast. This laid-back Garifuna village sits right on the Caribbean Sea and serves as the gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef. Two nights here let you snorkel the reef with a local guide, kayak the lagoon, taste hudut at a beachside kitchen, and watch the sunset turn the coconut palms amber.

On the final night you return toward Belize City for an easy early-morning airport drop-off, with time for a stroll around the colonial streets of the city or a wildlife cruise on the Belize River. The whole loop is achievable on paved highways; no ferries, no island transfers, no floatplanes required. Belize drives on the right, all signage is in English, and distances are short — no leg on this route exceeds roughly three hours.

What's Excluded

International or domestic flights to/from Belize City (BZE)
Mandatory local Third-Party Liability (TPL) insurance — purchased directly from the rental company at pick-up (typically USD 15–25 per day)
Optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Super CDW upgrades at the rental counter
Fuel (all vehicles returned full-to-full)
Meals and drinks unless stated
Entry fees to archaeological sites, national parks and caves (e.g. Xunantunich, Caracol, ATM Cave, Blue Hole)
Optional guided tours: ATM Cave, Xunantunich or Caracol with private guide, reef snorkelling, manatee safari, river cruise
Personal travel insurance (strongly recommended)
Gratuities for guides and lodge staff
Any expenses caused by road closures, weather events or force majeure
Important — Mandatory Local Insurance: Belize law requires all rental vehicles to carry Third-Party Liability insurance. This is NOT included in the online car rental price and MUST be purchased at the rental desk on pick-up. Budget approximately USD 15–25 per day. Failure to carry this insurance is illegal and voids all other coverage.
Road Conditions & Driving Tips: Main highways (George Price Highway, Hummingbird Highway) are paved and generally in good condition but contain frequent topes (speed bumps) — slow down well in advance. Side roads to ruins such as Caracol are unpaved and require a high-clearance 4WD or SUV; a standard sedan is NOT suitable. Avoid driving after dark: road lighting is minimal, livestock and speed bumps are unmarked, and wildlife crosses frequently after sunset. Maximum national speed limit is 55 mph (88 km/h) on open roads.
